Students and staff headed out of school in what was supposed to be a monthly fire drill on September 18th. However, things took a turn when firetrucks showed up, proving it was not a drill.
An electrical fire sparked in the welding room in the 1000 hallway. Smoke filled the classroom, and students within range were forced to exit promptly.
The fire was caused by a filter in one of the new machines inside the welding room. Since the fire was hidden inside the machine, it was able to grow to a dangerous size.
There were no serious injuries, however three staff members had to be hospitalized due to smoke inhalation according to Principal Lee Jones.
“It’s crazy because we were supposed to have a fire drill that day,”
Information on welding teacher Ms. Callaghan is yet to be obtained.
Hardly any equipment was damaged except for the machine that caused the fire. This is the first time in welding a machine has caught fire considering they have been used for years.
Classes in the 1000 hallway and welding room have resumed and are suitable for attending. Thanks to Bowie’s monthly fire drills, students and staff were able to handle the situation well with hardly any trouble, Jones said.
“In my opinion, I think they [students] did a good job.” Jones said.
In order for Bowie to ensure the safety of the school and each other, it is important to remember equipment safety, cleanliness, and to follow directions.
